The Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz on Thursday filed the nomination papers of President General Pervez Musharraf for the forthcoming presidential elections slated on Oct. 6, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Aziz, serving as the proposer, told reporters after the filing of papers that it marked a historical day for Pakistan and for the future of democracy in the country.
"We fully believe that President General Pervez Musharraf will succeed," Aziz said, "We will hold free, fair and transparent election and the people of Pakistan will be free to choose their future leadership."
The government on Thursday deployed hundreds of police and security personnel around the EC building to ensure a peaceful environment for the filing of nomination papers of presidential elections, local TV channels reported.
The lawyers community and opposition Peoples Party (PPP) will file their nomination papers separately.
A government official was quoted by DAWN NEWS TV channel as saying that the authorities had reached an understanding with the lawyers community and PPP that they would not get in the way of others when filing the nomination papers.
The Supreme Court will probably issue a verdict on Musharraf's candidature for presidential elections on Thursday.
