Laos is set to host the 23rd Francophonie ministerial meeting from November 20-21 in Vientiane, Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported Thursday.
The annual meeting will follow up the implementation of the various agreements made at the 11th Francophonie summit held in Romania last year, and set down a plan for the next summit, which will be held in Canada next year.
The meeting will also prepare a proposal for the next summit to inaugurate new members. Foreign ministers and ministers in charge of Francophonie affairs of the 55 permanent member countries, as well as 13 observer countries, are expected to attend, said the paper.
The establishment of the organization (Organization Internationale de la Francophonie) in 1970, through an agreement among leaders from 21 countries, is aimed to form a group of countries sharing the French language, all of which have the duty of promoting culture and increasing cultural and technical cooperation among members.
The organization meets in two separate, regular forums. The Francophonie summit attended by country leaders and held every two years, and the Francophonie ministerial meeting, which is held annually.
