Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende called for new strategies on Thursday to combat climate change.
Speaking at the general debate of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly, Balkenende noted that all of the industrialized countries should take the lead to take prompt action to tackle the problem of climate change.
"The future lies with those countries that excel in energy conservation and the use of cleaner technologies," he said. "We are not yet making sufficient use of the scope that innovation offers us."
Balkenende explained that his country wants to be a front- runner, adding "not only in our ambition to sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also in developing new strategies to deal with the negative effects of climate change."
It is important to take the climate and nature into account in all our investments, he said. "The most vulnerable developing countries deserve more support in tackling the problems they face. "
