Syrian Vice President Farouk al- Shara on Thursday stressed the importance of restoring security and maintaining full sovereignty in Iraq within the framework of national reconciliation, the official SANA news agency reported.

Shara made the remarks while meeting visiting Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdel Mahdi, during which the two sides reviewed the situation in Iraq, ongoing efforts to achieve national reconciliation there and bilateral relations.

Shara also underlined the significance of Iraq's unity and its Arab and Islamic belonging, said the report.

For his part, Mahdi expressed appreciation over Syria's stance towards Iraq and its embracing of the Iraqi refugees, asserting the need to strengthen ties between the two peoples and countries.

Mahdi arrived in Damascus Thursday afternoon for a three-day official visit, during which he would also meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Talks were expected to touch upon means of cooperation between Baghdad and Damascus on all levels, current political and security status in the violence-plagued Iraq and efforts to establish national reconciliation among Iraqi sects, the report said.

The two sides would also discuss mechanisms of reactivating agreements signed by the two neighboring countries, as well as economic, commercial and oil-related issues, according to the report.

Mahdi is currently on a regional tour which has taken him to Egypt and will also take him to Jordan.
