UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is pleased with a decision by Myanmar to accept a visit by the UN chief's special envoy Ibrahim Gambari, his press office said Thursday.
"The secretary-general is pleased that the government of Myanmar has agreed to a visit" by Gambari, beginning Sept. 29, said a statement issued by Ban's press office.
The UN chief called on the Myanmar authorities to "engage in a constructive dialogue" with Gambari and to "commit to a path of peaceful and inclusive national reconciliation," it said.
Earlier in the day, UN deputy spokesperson Marie Okabe said the secretary-general was informed by the foreign minister of Myanmar that his special envoy "will be welcome."
The UN chief, who decided Wednesday to send Gambari to Myanmar amid reports of political turmoil in the Southeast Asian country, "is pleased with this cooperation," Okabe said.
