Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday described immigration as "a natural phenomenon," saying that it is economically and socially inevitable.

Calderon made the remarks on the 25th annual meeting between Mexican and U.S. governors from states along the two countries' common borders in the Mexican port city Puerto Penasco. The meeting focused on immigration and border security.

"Immigration is a natural phenomenon that is economically and socially inevitable," said the president. He asked the United States to respect "the right to work wherever one can make the greatest contribution."

Calderon also noted that migration has cost Mexico dearly, as the country's best talents are leaving.

During the meeting, Mexican officials also protested the expansion of the U.S. border fencing and demanded the U.S. make moves to prevent its weapons from flowing into Mexico illegally.
