Vietnam will strengthen roles of cities and provinces in anti-corruption activities, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Friday.
Provincial anti-corruption steering committees to be established under the revised Anti-Corruption Law will cooperate with relevant agencies in promoting and supervising anti- corruption activities, according to new regulations discussed by the Steering Committee of the National Assembly of Vietnam, the country's top legislature, at its session ending on Thursday.
Heads of the steering committees, chairpersons of the provincial People's Committees, will be authorized to dismiss officials engaging in corruption or hindering anti-corruption agendas.
In the first half of this year, 347 acts of corruption were uncovered, of which 215 cases involving 500 people were brought to court, according to local media. Compared with the same period last year, corruption cases exposed increased by 41 percent and the number of people brought to court rose by 43 percent.
