Russian-U.S. exercises "Pacific Eagle" began in the Amur Bay on Friday, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
The participants in the maneuvers include the missile destroyer Lassen and the mine-coutermeasures ship Patriot on the U.S. side, the big antisubmarine ship Admiral Panteleyev, a minesweeper, three supporting vessels and patrol aircraft of the Russian Pacific Fleet.
The Russian and American ships will conduct a joint mine- sweeping operation, the Pacific Fleet press center said.
The participants are also to detect, detain and examine a " trespassing" vessel on Friday. During the next days, the naval sailors will conduct communication and maneuvering training operations, helicopter exercises, artillery firing at sea targets and an operation to help a vessel in distress.
A special target that will be put from an American ship will complicate the firing exercises. A P-3C Orion patrol plane for the first time will be used in searching for a vessel in distress.
After the exercises on Sept. 30, a commemoration ceremony will be held to honor the crews of the L-19 submarine and the American submarine, which went down in the Laperuza Strait in World War II.
After the maneuvers, the U.S. ships will return to the naval base in Japan, and the Russian Pacific Fleet ships will call at the Sakhalin port of Korsakov to participate in the City Day celebration.
