Urgent steps must be taken to prevent the further escalation of tensions in Myanmar, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"Further escalation of tensions is fraught with negative consequences for peace, stability and national unity in that country," the ministry said.
"We are seriously concerned over the exacerbated internal political situation in Myanmar," the ministry said.
"We support efforts of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to assist the settlement in Myanmar," the ministry said.
"We hope that the upcoming trip of special representative of the UN secretary general to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari will be an important factor in the stabilization of the internal political situation in that country," the ministry said.
On Thursday in Myanmar, at least nine people, including a Japanese man who was working as a journalist, were killed and 42 injured when security forces fired on demonstrators.
