Belarussian Defense Minister Leonid Maltsev said on Friday that the U.S. plan to build missile-shield bases in Europe may bring about unpredictable consequences, according to reports from the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek.
The deployment of the U.S. anti-missile systems in Europe will upset the equilibrium of power in the region and countries need to consider the relevant international treaties and the misgivings of the countries concerned before deciding on the installation of the shield, said Maltsev at a press conference after a meeting of the defense ministers of the member states in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) held in Bishkek.
He warned that the countries which have consented to the U.S. plan risk becoming prime targets for attacks.
The Russian-led CSTO military bloc was set up in 1992 to focus on regional security issues. It consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
