Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Friday called on the international community to tackle climate change under the UN framework.
Speaking at the general debate of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly, Badawi voiced his support to the leadership of the United Nations in combating climate change, saying that ongoing national or regional initiative to deal with the issue must not compete with, and should instead complement, the negotiations under the UN framework.
"We must agree to launch the process for negotiations on a post- 2012 agreement," he said. "We need to achieve consensus on certain fundamental issues even before the negotiations begin for a post- 2012 agreement," he said.
Badawi noted that a post-2012 agreement needs to be built upon the architecture and fundamentals of the Kyoto Protocol.
He advocated the principle of differentiated responsibilities, stressing that developing countries have their part to play in the management of climate change, but it must be commensurate with their abilities.
