The United States said Friday that it imposed visa bans on more than 30 members of the Myanmar government as well as their families.
"In response to the Burmese regime's continued crackdown, the State Department has designated more than three dozen additional government and military officials and their families as ineligible to receive visas to travel to the United States," the State Department said in a statement.
The move came after U.S. President George W. Bush signed an executive order Thursday to tighten sanctions on Myanmar.
According to the executive order by Bush, assets of 14 officials of Myanmar's military government under U.S. jurisdiction will be frozen and U.S. citizens or groups are forbidden to do financial transactions with them.
In Myanmar, eight protestors were reportedly killed and 42 others injured by shots fired by security forces at demonstrators in Myanmar's biggest city of Yangon Thursday afternoon.
