Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and his Portuguese counterpart Jose Socrates on Friday discussed a possible European Union mission to Myanmar to back up a similar initiative raised by a United Nations special envoy.
Prodi and Socrates, whose country holds the EU presidency, discussed in a telephone conversation the prospect of the possible European mission to the Asian country, the ANSA news agency reported.
In Myanmar on Thursday, at least nine people, including a Japanese man who was working as journalist, were killed and 42 others injured when security forces fired at demonstrators.
Since Sept. 18, Buddhist monks and people have demonstrated in the streets in the biggest city Yangon and other parts of the country.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon decided earlier Wednesday to send Ibrahim Gambari as his special envoy to Myanmar amid reports of turmoil in the Southeast Asian country.
