Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat on Saturday supported statements by President Mahmoud Abbas that a peace deal with Israel was possible in six months after a U.S.-sponsored conference is held.
"This could happen because we will build on previous negotiations instead of starting talks with Israel from the zero," Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio.
"Negotiations were held in Camp David, Taba and, before that, there were the final-status discussions in addition to the initiatives and plans... so what we need now is decision, not negotiations," Erekat explained.
On Friday, Abbas said Israel and the Palestinian Authority can sign a peace agreement in six months after a U.S.-sponsored peace conference is held, revealing also that the peace meeting would kick off on November 15.
The PA has demanded that the conference, which will focus on reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, be conclusive by involving all regional sides which affect the stability in the region, like Syria and Lebanon.
U.S. President George W. Bush's call for the meeting came after Islamic Hamas movement seized control of Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Abbas and boosted their rule on the Strip.
Meanwhile, Erekat said that Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were going to meet in Jerusalem. "There are some points still under discussion, we hope to overcome tomorrow and then the date of the meetings would be set."
