Six Tamil Tiger rebels were killed by troops on Saturday evening in northern Sri Lanka, the Media Center for National Security (MCNS) said Sunday.
The troops confronted the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) rebels in the Kallikulam area, Mannar around 4:45 p.m. (1115 GMT) Saturday, the MCNS said in a statement.
On the same day around 1:00 p.m. (0730 GMT), the troops took a search operation and recovered 50 anti-personnel mine in the same area, the MCNS added.
No damage reported to the troops, the MCNS also said.
More than 5,000 people have died in the island's separatist armed conflict since the end of 2005.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
