A Fatah movement spokesman said on Sunday that dialogue with Hamas would be possible if the Islamic movement got rid of "the coup-makers against the Palestinian legitimacy."

"If Hamas was able to eliminate those who draw disasters and destruction to the Palestinian people, the door will open immediately for talks with Hamas which has seats in the parliament, " spokesman Ahmed Abdel Rahman told Voice of Palestine radio.

"There are two streams in Hamas. The first contacts the Arab countries and ask the Arab leaders to mediate for the dialogue, and a second stream of coup-seekers who always announce they are against the dialogue," Abdel Rahman added.

On June 15, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip after routing Fatah loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas, who in response fired the Hamas-led unity government and designated a caretaker government in the Fatah-dominated West Bank.

Hamas was confined to the Gaza Strip where Israel tightened closure. To resume talks, Abbas wanted Hamas to step back and end what he considered a coup.

Abdel Rahman warned that Hamas would be "canceled as a partner in the Palestinian democratic life if it sticks to the stance, not to retreat the coup."
