Unidentified gunmen on Sunday killed a Sunni politician affiliated with the Iraqi Islamic Party, in Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, a provincial police source said.
"Mu'mtaz al-A'araji, a member in the Provincial Council, was killed when unknown gunmen attacked his convoy with small arms fire while heading to his office in the al-Wihda neighborhood in southern (part of) the city," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attack also resulted in the killing of three bodyguards, the source said.
Earlier on Saturday, gunmen shot dead three Sunni clerics in separate attacks in a single day.
Mosul, Iraq's third largest city, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
