Visiting Special Envoy of the United Nations secretary-general Ibrahim Gambari met with Myanmar Acting Prime Minister Lieutenant-General Thein Sein in Nay Pyi Taw earlier on Sunday, a release of the U.N. Information Center said.
Thein Sein is also First Secretary of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), the fifth highest-ranking Myanmar leader.
Gambari conveyed a message from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon.
Gambari expects to meet with the country's top leader Senior- General Than Shwe, SPDC Chairman, before he concludes his Myanmar mission, the release said.
It added that Gambari also met with Minister of Information Brigadier-General Kyaw Hsan, Minister of Culture Major-General Khin Aung Myint and Deputy Foreign Minister U Kyaw Thu.
On the same day, Gambari flew from Nay Pyi Taw to Yangon in the afternoon and met with detained leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi for over an hour and consulted with the U.N. Country Team and the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to the release.
The release disclosed no details about Gambari's meetings with all of the respective persons from the Myanmar side.
Gambari, who came amid widespread mass demonstrations by Buddhist monks and people in several parts of the country since Sept. 18, arrived in Yangon Saturday afternoon via Singapore.
The situation in Yangon on Sunday was calm.
Gambari last came to Myanmar twice in May and November 2006.
