A state-run Myanmar official newspaper published on Monday photos of 11 people described as violent protestors with weapons who were arrested during a demonstration in the country's biggest city of Yangon in the last week end.
The protestors were holding such weapons as knife, iron rod, scissors, catapult, marble and nut in confronting the government security forces on Saturday on a main road near the Sule Pagoda road, the heart of the city, according to the New Light of Myanmar.
The 11, arrested by the security forces, include five students from three universities, the report said, adding that two local people and six security forces members were injured in the incident.
According to a compiled statistics based on the official figures, since the imposition of a 60-day curfew order and a ban of demonstration in the city on Tuesday night, a total of 10 protestors were killed and 16 other civilians injured by shots fired by the security forces against defying demonstrators, while 45 government security forces were wounded during the clashes up to date.
Among the dead was a visiting Japanese journalist with a video camera covering news on the event.
The situation in Yangon was calm on the last two days.
Since Sept. 18, Buddhist monks and people have taken to the streets to stage demonstrations in Yangon and other parts of the country.
Meanwhile, two mass rallies of 100,000 and 52,000 people were officially reported to have been staged respectively in Kachin state's Myikyina and Kayah state's Loikaw on Saturday and Sunday in support of the government's constitutional national convention amid the imposition of a 60-day curfew order and a ban of demonstration in Yangon and Mandalay.
