The Australian government on Monday warned Australian citizens to exercise caution in the Republic of the Maldives "because of the risk of terrorist attack. "
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) reissued its travel advice for Maldives, increasing the level of warning for the capital of Male to "high degree of caution," which is in the middle of five levels.
The move came after a bomb exploded in Male last Saturday in which 12 foreign tourists were injured.
"Australians in the Republic of the Maldives should pay close attention to their personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks," DFAT said in the new travel advice.
"We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Male at this time because of the uncertain security situation following the bomb explosion on 29 September 2007," it said.
DFAT said Australians should avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings as they may turn violent.
The Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka provides consular assistance to Australians in the Maldives because Australia does not have an Embassy or Consulate in the Maldives, DFAT said.
