The military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) denied on Monday Israeli reports that the army had killed two militants in an eastern Gaza operation.
A statement by Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, said that Israeli special troops entered eastern Gaza city at midnight where clashes erupted between the soldiers and a group of fighters which discovered the Israeli soldiers.
"Our fighters were able to return to their basis unharmed," the statement said, adding that a number of soldiers were wounded in the clashes "and helicopters landed in the scene to evacuate the casualties."
Earlier, the Israeli army said its soldiers had hit two gunmen in eastern Gaza.
For their part, Palestinian medical sources also did not confirm the Israeli reports that two gunmen were killed.
