The European Union issued a statement on Monday voicing support for the second inter-Korean Summit slated to be held on Oct. 2-4 in Pyongyang.

"The EU supports any initiative conducive to the fostering of peace, stability and cooperation on the Peninsula," the statement said, adding that the EU follows with keen interest all efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is scheduled to arrive in Pyongyang on Tuesday to meet his counterpart of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il, the second-ever summit between the two countries.

The summit "will serve to reinforce the growing atmosphere of confidence and trust on the Korean Peninsula, which would also contribute to efforts within the framework of the six-party talks, a process fully supported by the EU, to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," the document said.

The top leaders from the two countries are expected to discuss the establishment of a peace mechanism, boosting economic cooperation and promoting reunification efforts on the peninsula.

The summit comes at a time of easing tensions between the two sides and growing exchanges and cooperation.

The first inter-Korean Summit, held in 2000, resulted in a wide range of cooperation between the two countries.
