Iranian DM praises Revolution Guards as "anti-terrorist"

Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar on Monday praised the country's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as an "anti-terrorist" organization, local Fars news agency reported.

"The IRGC is the biggest and the most revolutionary anti- terrorist organization not only in the region but in the world," Najjar told a meeting of Defense Ministry officials.

He stressed that the Revolutionary Guards is at the service of security and welfare of Iranian people and guards the peace in the region.

His remarks came after the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives called last month on the U.S. State Department to brand Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization.

He said the U.S. move "is ridiculous and lacks of any legitimacy," adding that the Revolutionary Guards will never surrender to Washington's charges and politico-psychological pressure.

Apparently in a sharp reaction tit-for-tat over the decisions of their U.S. counterparts, Iranian lawmakers on Saturday branded the U.S. troops and the CIA as terrorist groups.

Washington has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program.

Iran denied the U.S. charges and insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
