United Nations General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim welcomed on Monday the upcoming talks between the leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Pyongyang scheduled for Tuesday.
"The president of the General Assembly welcomes the upcoming historic meeting," Kerim's spokesman, Janos Tisovszky, told a press conference. "The president wishes to commend the two leaders for their brave initiative and further encourages them to use the opportunity of their meeting to make progress on promoting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and on inter-Korean reconciliation."
ROK President Roh Moo-hyun will travel to the DPRK on Tuesday and hold a three-day summit with DPRK leader Kim Jong Il.
"The president notes that it is in the interest of all member states of the United Nations to achieve progress on those issues," Tisovszky said. "The president believes that it is through dialogue that differences between member states can best be resolved."
