Top Japanese government officials on Tuesday said they had high hopes for the inter-Korean summit.

Chief Cabinet spokesman Nobutaka Machimura told a press conference Japan wishes the summit to be fruitful and help ease tension in northeast Asia.

The top government spokesman stressed that Japan expected that progress could be made on denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.

Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said at a separate press conference that he hopes the summit can contribute to peace and stability of the region.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun arrived in Pyongyang Tuesday for a three-day visit, during which he will hold talks with Kim Jong Il, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
