The United States said Tuesday it has no objections to Britain's plan to withdraw 1,000 troops out of Basra in southern Iraq by Christmas.

"The Iraqi security forces have been working with the British there in Basra, and they've been working to get to this point, where the Iraqis say they are able to take over the security," White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said.

Perino made the remarks after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is currently paying a visit to Iraq, announced plans to withdraw 1,000 British troops out of Iraq by Christmas.

Brown also said he believes Iraqi security forces can take over the security of Basra.

Britain has been the strongest ally of the United States in Iraq. After the planned withdrawal, there will be some 5,500 British soldiers left in Iraq.
