The UN Secretary General's Special Advisor Ibrahim Gambari, who is on his way back to New York after visiting Myanmar, met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday morning.
According to a statement released by Singapore Foreign Ministry, Lee, in Singapore's capacity as ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Chair, exchanged views with Gambari on his visit to Myanmar.
Gambari arrived here on Tuesday night from Myanmar, where he had met with the country's top leader Senior-General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), and detained leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi.
Lee was encouraged by the access and cooperation given by the Myanmar government to Gambari, said the statement.
Lee told Gambari that ASEAN is fully behind his mission to help all parties involved in Myanmar work towards a political solution for national reconciliation and a peaceful transition to democracy.
Lee also encouraged Gambari to press on with the UN's efforts, which offer the best hope for Myanmar and its people.
Lee had earlier discussed the developments in Myanmar with the other ASEAN leaders and conveyed ASEAN's fully support to UN mission to Myanmar leaders, calling on the country to continue keeping its channels open to the UN.
Gambari also met Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo, who has just returned from the UN General Assembly session in New York. They had a fruitful exchange of views on developments in Myanmar, said the statement.
