The second inter-Korean summit has inspired hope among South Koreans of permanent peace and common prosperity on the peninsula, a leading newspaper said Wednesday.

In an article published by The Korea Herald, former Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun said the summit is a cornerstone for building a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula.

"We need to be wise in our ties with North Korea and at this point, regularizing inter-Korean summits comes as an absolute necessity," Jeong said. "This is because the summit will lay the basis for a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula."

He hoped that South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) would "agree on a schedule for the third summit during their second round of formal talks."

South Korea's progressive civic groups hailed the summit as a milestone in the journey toward peace and prosperity on the peninsula, as they watched President Roh Moo-hyun cross the Military Demarcation Line early Tuesday.

Student organizations also staged various street performances in Seoul to raise public awareness of the summit.

The summit could ease tensions between the two sides by boosting inter-Korean economic cooperation, Yang Seung-ham, a professor at Yonsei University, was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Roh traveled some 200 km overland to Pyongyang Tuesday for a summit meeting with DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il.

The summit is the second of its kind since the peninsula was divided more than half a century ago. Roh's predecessor, Kim Dae-jung, traveled to the DPRK for the first inter-Korean summit in June 2000.
