A Hamas militant was killed on Wednesday when a tunnel he was digging in northern Gaza collapsed, which brought to three the number of the deceased in the coastal strip since midnight.

The military wing of Hamas, Ezz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement that Hamed al-Rehel, 25, died during "a Jihad mission in Beit Lahiya town."

The statement did not elaborate. But Palestinian medical sources said al-Rehel was killed during the tunnel collapse.

The sources at Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza added that al-Rehel was dead the time when he was brought to the hospital by his two colleagues, who were moderately injured.

It was believed that the three men were digging the underground tunnel to reach an Israeli army post behind the Gaza-Israeli security fence or to use it in case of an Israeli army incursion.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli army rolled into the eastern part of Khan Younis in southern Gaza Strip and shot dead a Palestinian militant.

The Hamas man was killed as several Israeli army tanks and armored vehicles stormed al-Fahkari neighborhood, in eastern Khan Younis, while Hamas militants opened fire at invading Israeli armored vehicles, said witnesses.

The Israeli troops also killed a Hamas fighter in a pre-dawn airstrike raid in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip.
