Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday asked the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) to play more important role in helping find a peaceful solution to the current crisis in Myanmar.
Singapore, the current rotating chair country of ASEAN, should join hands with Malaysia and Thailand to form a group of three member countries to secure a solution for the problems in Myanmar, said Hun Sen.
"ASEAN should be playing a more active role," he said, adding that the problems in Myanmar have reached a new level of seriousness.
"We would like to see Myanmar exercise the maximum tolerance and refrain from using force to crack down on the protesters," he said.
He also suggested that the Myanmar government try to carry on the process of reconciliation, solve the problems and move towards democratization, peace and respect of human rights.
Myanmar's military force detained hundreds of monks and civilians in the recent demonstrations. The government admitted 10 deaths in the violence against the protesters.
