Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday hailed the talks between South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Il.
"The inter-Korean summit is of great importance, of course. It is an integral part of the efforts being made to establish peace and security on the Korean peninsula and in northeast Asia as a whole," Interfax news agency quoted the top diplomat as saying.
A special working group has been set up to deal with security issues in northeast Asia, as part of the agreement reached at the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue, Lavrov said.
Roh and Kim on Wednesday ended their two rounds of summit talks, agreeing to issue a joint declaration on Thursday.
The summit is the second of its kind since the peninsula was divided more than half a century ago. Roh's predecessor, Kim Dae-jung, traveled to the DPRK for the first inter-Korean summit in June 2000.
