The Indonesian government on Wednesday hailed the historic summit meeting between South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-il in Pyongyang on October 2-4.
The summit is useful to strengthen friendly relations and mutual trust as well as to create a situation conducive to the settlement of crucial issues between the two sides, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Indonesian government sees the summit as an essential step which will give positive contributions to security and political stability in the region, it said.
The summit is expected to discuss ways to promote common prosperity, peace on the Korean Peninsula, national reconciliation and reunification between the two countries.
During his stay, Roh, who traveled some 200 km overland to visit Pyongyang on Tuesday, is expected to hold two rounds of talks with Kim.
The June 2000 summit between South Korea's former president Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il resulted in a series of inter-Korean projects aimed at further promoting reconciliation and economic cooperation between the two sides.
