A senior official of the Arab League (AL) said on Wednesday international supervision is important for the success of a U.S.-proposed international conference on Mideast peace, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

Any agreement to be concluded at the peace conference will not reach success if it is not held under international supervision and based on international documents and mechanisms, AL Assistant Secretary General for Palestinian Affairs Mohamed Sobeih was quoted as saying.

Arabs have always called for a comprehensive peace conference to group all concerned parties, including the Quartet mediators and members of the Group of Eight, but these calls were always ignored, he said.

Thus, Arabs support an international peace conference to be held under international, not just American, supervision to render it a success, Sobeih said.

However, the AL official warned, Israel has not shown any sign to help restore confidence in the stalled Mideast peace process.

Sobeih said most of the official statements of the Jewish state try to downplay hope that the U.S.-brokered conference would reach a serious peace document, which shows they are not serious in discussing final-status issues.

Meanwhile, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Wednesday that the final-status negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority will start next week.
