Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura late Wednesday gave a positive appraisal of the joint document released earlier in the day at the end of the latest round of six-party talks on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
"In the end, (the agreement) has become something that Japan values," the top government spokesman was quoted by Kyodo News as saying at a press conference at the premier's official residence.
In the joint document, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) agreed to disable its existing nuclear facilities subject and provide a declaration of all its nuclear programs by the end of this year.
Regarding removing the DPRK from the list of terrorist countries, Machimura said it depends on the DPRK's implementation of the document.
Machimura urged the DPRK to take the lead in resolving the issue of the abduction of Japanese nationals. He reiterated Japan's intention to further extend the economic sanctions it has imposed on the DPRK.
