Poll shows Palestinian majority for joining fall summit

A public opinion poll showed on Saturday that a Palestinian majority in the West Bank and Gaza are in favor of joining the U.S.-sponsored international peace conference slated for November.

The poll, which was conducted by a Ramallah-based organization called the Near East Consulting, said 76 percent Palestinians are in favor of the Palestinian participation in November peace summit.

The poll was made among a thousand Palestinians chosen from Gaza Strip, the West Bank and east Jerusalem at random through phone call from Sept. 28 to 30.

According to the poll, which movement the available support matters. The results showed that 92 percent of Fatah supporters strongly supported the participation, while 61 percent of Hamas supporters strongly opposed to participate.

Islamic Hamas movement, which has been ruling the Gaza Strip since mid June after it violently took control of the enclave from its rival Fatah movement, has been opposing the U.S.-sponsored peace summit.

Deposed Prime Minister of Hamas Ismail Haneya called on Arab and Muslim countries, mainly Saudi Arabia, to boycott the conference, warning of a threat posed by the conference to the Palestinian cause.

However, 55 percent of the available said "the Palestinians are in a real need for an international conference to the Middle East Israeli-Arab conflicts."

Although most of the Palestinians reckoned the conference is necessary, there are still 61 percent of the answerers expressed their pessimism over the possibility that the final status issues can be solved at the summit.

However, 74 percent of the Palestinians are in favor of reaching a permanent peace agreement with Israel during the conference.
