Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday said the securing of highest number of votes by President Pervez Musharraf in the presidential election is historical and would ensure progress and continuity of policies, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.
"Today's result reflects the mood of the voters and it is encouraging that discipline has been maintained in the voting process," Aziz said while addressing a press conference soon after the counting of votes in the Senate and National Assembly.
According to unofficial results, Musharraf secured 252 votes against 2 by justice Wajihuddin out of a total of 257 votes, in the National Assembly and the Senate, with another 3 rejected. Musharraf also got 104 votes from Sindh Assembly, 31 from North West Frontier Province (NWFP), 253 from Punjab and 33 from Balochistan. His rival candidate Justice Wajihuddin got 1 vote from NWFP and 3 from Punjab Assembly.
Aziz said this election proved that Musharraf enjoyed complete support of members from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Qaid and its allies and showed the rule of law and sanctity of the constitution existed in the country.
When asked to comment on Pakistan People's Party's decision to abstain from the voting process, Aziz said, "every party has its own decision and has nothing to do with any deal."
However, the decision of opposition for not participating in the voting process disappointed the nation, he added.
Aziz also thanked the nation for rejecting opposition's calls of strikes and said people wanted promotion of democracy and progress and development in the country.
