The South Pacific Tokelau is to hold a referendum on becoming independent from New Zealand, the territory authority said Monday.
The voters will decide whether the island should become a nation of self-government, in free association with New Zealand.
With three far-flung coral atolls of a population of 1,537, Tokelau currently is administered by New Zealand.
A referendum in February last year failed to meet the required two-thirds majority to change the status of the territory.
Tokelauan authorities have requested another vote. It will be held between Oct. 20 and 24, with results to be announced on Oct. 25.
New Zealand officials will head to the Pacific territory to monitor the referendum. Among those monitoring the referendum are also United Nations decolonization and electoral assistance officials.
