A senior official with the UN's Peacebuilding Commission left on Monday for Sierra Leone to meet with the newly-elected leaders of the western African country.
Dutch Ambassador Frank Majoor, in his capacity as chair of the Peacebuilding Commission's Sierra Leone configuration, is to meet with newly-elected President Ernest Bai Koroma and members of his cabinet, UN spokesperson Michele Montas told a noon briefing.
Majoor will also have meetings with members of Parliament and civil society and with the UN Country Team, she said.
The visit is expected to advance development of a " peacebuilding cooperation framework" with the Sierra Leone government and will also highlight efforts in areas including good governance, justice and security sector reform, and youth employment.
Majoor will brief members of the Peacebuilding Commission when he returns to New York on Oct. 15, Montas added.
The Peacebuilding Commission was established in December 2005 by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council in accordance with the Outcome Document of the 2005 World Summit. It is an inter-governmental advisory body designed to help countries in post-conflict peace building, recovery, reconstruction and development.
