UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon confirmed on Monday the appointment of Mike Smith of Australia to serve as executive director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) at the assistant secretary-general level.
The UN chief made the announcement following the approval of Smith's appointment by the Security Council.
Smith, who will join CTED soon, will replace Javier Ruperez of Spain who stepped down at the end of June.
Smith, who currently serves as Australia's ambassador for counter-terrorism, has held a number of senior postings in the diplomatic service of his country, including in Egypt, United States, Algeria and Tunisia.
The CTED was established in March 2004 by the Security Council in its resolution 1535 adopted in 2004 to enhance the counter- terrorism committee's ability to monitor the implementation of resolution 1373 adopted in 2001, raise the counter-terrorism capacities of member states by facilitating the provision of technical assistance, and promote closer cooperation and coordination with international, regional and subregional organizations.
