An international workshop on Vietnam- European Union (EU) relations development opened in HanoiTuesday to propose directions and measures to develop the bilateral comprehensive cooperation.
The workshop themed "Partnership and Cooperation Agreement ( PCA) and the Prospects for Vietnam-EU Relations" is an opportunity to review the past achievements, and work out concrete directions and measures to deepen Vietnam's cooperation with the EU in various areas, paving the way for the both sides to negotiate and conclude the PCA, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem said at the opening ceremony.
The PCA proposed by the EU will help increase political dialogue in such fields as human rights, anti-terrorism, transnational crimes battle, non-proliferation of weapons, migration, energy, environment, technological cooperation and sustainable development, said delegates to the workshop.
The PCA will also help strengthen the regional integration process in South East Asia, they said, hoping that it will create an updated and appropriate framework to develop the Vietnam-EU cooperation and strengthen the ties between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), contributing to promoting the peace, stability and development, and meeting demands of the globalized world.
The 27-member EU with population of 500 million, accounting for 30 percent of the world's gross domestic product (GDP), 41 percent of international trade and 43 percent of global investment is now one of Vietnam's top trading partners and the biggest official development assistance donor.
The two sides have also fostered their cooperation on politics, culture and education since their diplomatic relations establishment in 1990.
