Egypt on Tuesday strongly criticized an Israeli annexation of Palestinian lands in East Jerusalem and called on the world community to stop Israel from spoiling peace efforts in the region.

In a statement obtained by Xinhua, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki expressed deep concern at the reported Israeli army's confiscation of 1,100 dunams (1.03 million square meters) of Palestinian lands in East Jerusalem.

Zaki noted that Israel's seizing of those lands proved the truth of reports that Israel is planning to go ahead with its scheme to separate the northern parts of the West Bank from its southern ones.

The spokesman called on the world community to take a clear stand to stop Israel's act to tamper with the future of the region through "throwing the option of a just peace out of the window."

Zaki said the Israeli move ran against all efforts to relaunch serious Palestinian-Israeli political talks on a final-status settlement, calling on all international peace powers including the Mideast Quartet (the UN, the EU, Russia and the United States) to stop the Israeli plots.

Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported on Tuesday that the Israeli Defense Forces recently issued an order expropriating the land from four Arab villages located between East Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Ma'aleh Adumim.
