Deposed Prime Minister of Hamas Ismail Haneya announced on Wednesday evening that Hamas movement's control of the Gaza Strip enclave is temporary.
The movement, listed as a terrorist organization by Europe and the United States, took control of the poor and densely populated enclave in mid June after its militants defeated President Mahmoud Abbas' security forces.
"Our administration in Gaza is temporary," Haneya said at the end of a public prayer in Gaza City. It is the first time Haneya makes such a statement since Hamas had taken control of Gaza by force.
He, meanwhile, revealed that his movement will hold reconciliation talks with the Fatah, hinting that it may be ready to give up control of the enclave.
"There is a serious movement in the field of Palestinian dialogue and we have agreed to hold a dialogue with Fatah in one of the Arab capitals," said Haneya.
However, Haneya, who is one of the movement's political leaders, doesn't have a powerful influence on the movement, compared with hard-liners in the movement like Hamas chief in Damascus Khaled Mashaal.
Haneya also doesn't have any influence on Hamas' armed wing, better known as al-Qassam brigades, which led the infighting against Abbas' forces and his Fatah movement.
Haneya and his national unity government, which was formed after reaching Mecca agreement in February, were sacked by President Abbas following the control of Gaza. Abbas formed a new caretaker government based in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Source: Xinhua
