At least 21 people were killed and 18 others injured in a landslide at a makeshift gold mine in southern Colombia on Saturday, local police said.
The open pit mine collapsed in the morning near the town of Suarez, 350 km southwest of capital Bogota.
Police said rescuers had recovered 21 bodies and found 18 injured people, adding that the mission was going on to search for about 50 others possibly still being trapped down.
After it was reported that gold had been found underground, local residents began digging for the rumored treasure despite their inadequacy of experience in tunneling or mining, which led to the tragedy, police said.
