U.S. First Lady Laura Bush will visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan on Oct. 20-26 to promote breast cancer awareness in the region, her spokeswoman said Monday.

"While in the region she will also visit several cancer treatment and screening centers and launch new cancer awareness activities. She will observe first-hand the U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research and discuss ways to expand its role," Laura Bush's spokeswoman Sally McDonough said.

Laura Bush has become an increasingly outspoken and quietly powerful emissary of the White House, the New York Times said in a report Monday.

The trip will be Laura Bush's 14th solo overseas excursion and the third so far this year, the report said. It added that during the trip she will pay courtesy calls to at least two heads of state, the kings of Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
