Around 20 Tamil Tiger rebels and one government soldier were killed in a battle in the northern SriLanka on Monday, the nation's defense officials said Tuesday.

Udaya Nanayakkara, the military spokesman said that the clash erupted between government troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels at Kullikulam in the northern district of Vavuniya Monday evening.

The troops killed 20 LTTE rebels and injured 15 others while one soldier was also killed and seven injured on the military side, Nanayakkara said.

Meanwhile, at least six bodies of soldiers were found on the scene of an attack on the army detachment by LTTE rebels at Talgasmankada in the eastern district of Ampara Monday night, the spokesman added.

Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence sine the end of 2005.
