Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Vice President Dick Cheney are distant cousin, Cheney's wife said Tuesday.
Lynne Cheney said in an interview with MSNBC television that she was surprised to discover her 66-year-old husband and the 46-year-old Illinois Senator are eighth cousins while doing family research for her new book.
Cheney said that the two men in rival parties had a common ancestor who immigrated from France in the 17th century.
"This is such an amazing American story that one ancestor, a man who came to Maryland named Maurine Devau, could be responsible down the family lines for lives that have taken such different and varied paths as Dick's and Barack Obama's," she said.
Lynne Cheney is writing her 11th book, which is about her own experience of growing up in Wyoming and also includes "a lot of genealogical research" about Cheney's family, her family and "these heroic and amazing tales of people who went west."
The Illinois senator and the vice president hold different views on many issues, the Iraq war in particular, which Obama opposes but Cheney supports.
