Mustapha Mansouri was elected Tuesday president of Morocco's Chamber of Representatives by a narrow margin.
Mansouri, 54, is also the president of the country's National Assembly of Independents party.
Having been a teacher in Mohammed V University in Rabat, Mansouri started his political life in the 1990s.
Since 1998, he has successively acted as minister of Transport and Merchant Marine, minister of Industry, Commerce, Energy and Mines, minister of Employment, Social Affairs and Solidarity, and minister of Employment and Professional Training.
He was elected president of the National Assembly of Independents in May 2007.
The national Chamber of Representatives is composed of 325 directly elected members, each of whom holds a five-year tenure.
The country held a legislative election on Sept. 7, 2007, when members of the Chamber of Representatives were re-elected.
