"Vietnam will actively cooperate with other UN Security Council members to give out appropriate policies for the sake of the legitimate interests of all UN member countries," Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was quoted by local media on Wednesday as saying.

"We will make efforts, along with other countries, to help lessen tensions, and prevent and peacefully solve conflicts in the world. Vietnam supports and is always ready to contribute to comprehensive and absolute disarmament process, as well as condemns international terrorism in any forms and advocates its elimination in accordance with international law," Dung was cited by People newspaper.

Vietnam is also completing its preparation process so that the country "can effectively participate in peacekeeping activities of the UN in line with its conditions and capability."

"Vietnam will, along with other countries, accelerate multilateral cooperation with the UN being a center, and regard multilateral approach as an effective and long-term solution."

Vietnam will adhere to the guidelines, goals, and principles of the UN Charter, international law in addition to actively asking for consultancy from and cooperating closely with other UN Security Council members to give out appropriate and timely policies for the sake of the legitimate interests of all UN member countries.

A non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council is responsible for taking a full part in the process of drafting and building the council's important decisions pertaining to the most important issues relating to peace and security in various regions and the world as a whole, he said.

With 183 out of 190 votes, the UN General Assembly on Oct. 16 elected Vietnam non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 term. Vietnam will officially begin work in the council on Jan. 1, 2008, replacing Qatar, representing Asian countries, which will conclude its term on Dec. 31, 2007.
