UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned on Wednesday the forceful and illegal entry of Government security forces into the UN compound in Mogadishu, Somalia, and the detention of a UN official.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban called for the immediate and unconditional release of the staff member, and reminded the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia of its obligation to protect all UN staff members and property.
"Today's actions are in flagrant violation of the 1946 Convention on Privileges and Immunity to which the Somali government formally committed in the January 2006 agreement," he stated.
News reports said about 30 Somali government forces in two military trucks and armed with machine guns took part in the raid of the UN compound.
The Horn of Africa nation has seen a violent surge since the Islamists were ousted last December by Ethiopian-backed government forces.
The insurgents have targeted Ethiopian-backed government troops in near daily attacks in Mogadishu, displacing thousands of civilians in one of the dangerous cities in the world.
