At least six people including two Japanese nationals have been reported missing in eastern Sri Lanka, the police said Thursday.

The group, including two Japanese working for a Japanese aid agency at Morawewa in the eastern port district of Trincomalee, had gone to inspect an abandoned irrigation tank in the area when they went missing on Wednesday evening.

"They have been reported missing since then," the police spokesman Jayantha Wickramaratna said.

Wickramaratna added that the Morawewa police were carrying out investigations into the incident.

Two Tamils who are employees of the Irrigation Department were also on the missing list.

The police said it was too early to say who was responsible for the incident.
